On today's 80th anniversary of D-Day we think not just of the brave and the fallen but also of the animals who served with them. Five years ago we visited the beaches of Normandy and thinking of the soldiers who gave their all to free Europe from the grip of Nazi Germany was a very humbling experience.
The Second World War was traumatic not only for the people who fought in it, or for the victims of war, nature and wildlife also paid a big price. Habitats were destroyed by heavy machinery, tanks and grenades, animals were killed or driven from their homes. Soil and flowers torn up and trampled, bombs leaving nothing but craters of death and destruction. Eighty years on, nature has healed but the cruelty of war and the sacrifices of humans and animals must not be forgotten. Never again.
